2018 Election Analysis

Tuesday, Nov. 6th was a great night for progressives in North Carolina. Battling Republican supermajorities in both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA), heavily skewed maps – the result of extreme partisan gerrymandering in favor of Republicans – and incumbents in the majority of state legislative seats, it was an uphill battle. Yet – due primarily to an especially large swing in the most flippable districts – Democrats managed to secure significant wins in both chambers, breaking the supermajority in the NC House and the NC Senate, restoring the governor’s veto and setting the stage for even greater gains in 2020.
