About FLIP NC

FLIP NC is a grassroots group working through direct voter outreach for a more progressive North Carolina.

Why FLIP NC

We envision a progressive NC that works for all North Carolinians and protects the most vulnerable among us. We believe the best way to achieve this vision is by building civic engagement through year-round, direct voter outreach within communities.

What do we mean by “a progressive North Carolina”?

We mean a North Carolina that protects our democracy, ends economic oppression, ensures equal rights and protections, supports strong public education, guarantees affordable health care, protects the environment, and enacts broad criminal justice reforms. Learn more about our progressive values.

What We’re doing

We are taking strategic, evidence-based action to build a progressive movement across the state by enlisting an army of volunteers who share our long-term goals.

Direct, person-to-person voter outreach is the most important and effective action we can take. The 2018 midterm elections saw historic turn out across the board. While less than 10% of the sporadic, left-leaning voters we were targeting in NC-H36 and NC-H37 voted in the 2014 midterms, 42% voted in 2018, an incredible increase. Yet, among the sporadic, left-leaning voters we canvassed, 71% voted. That’s a huge impact in an already historic election year for voter turnout. And we’ll be targeting these “low-propensity” voters to an even greater degree in 2019 and 2020.

Overall, 91% of the voters we spoke with voted in the 2018 midterm elections. These efforts made a critical difference in flipping multiple legislative seats 2018. In 2020, they can be the difference between a North Carolina governed by a deeply entrenched right-wing oligarchy and the progressive future we want for our state.

Strategy

In 2018, our primary goal was to restore the governor’s veto power by breaking the Republican supermajority in at least one chamber of the NC General Assembly (NCGA) through direct, targeted voter outreach. Learn more about our 2018 strategy.

Following the success of the 2018 elections, we’re expanding both our targets and our strategy as we look towards 2020.

Our Goals

  • Flip one chamber of the NCGA blue so Democrats can fight for fair maps when they are redrawn following the 2020 Census

  • Re-elect Governor Cooper (D)

  • Flip NC blue in the presidential race

  • Elect a Democrat to replace Thom Tillis (R) in the US Senate
