Phone Bank FAQs - NC House District 1

Democratic Candidate: Emily Bunch Nicholson

Since voting to re-elect President Obama by 2 points in 2012, this district, in northeastern North Carolina, has voted for Republican candidates at all levels by 6-8 points in each subsequent election. The good news for Democrats is that the pool of untapped voters in 2018 – registered voters who did not vote – leans Democratic by 30 points! This means Democrats have an excellent chance to win this district back in a high-turnout election by centering the needs and priorities of the majority-Black Democratic base here. Five counties fall into this NC House district: Bertie, Chowan, Perquimans, Tyrell, and Washington.

WHO IS MY CURRENT REPRESENTATIVE?

Our focus is on increasing name recognition for the Democratic candidate, but voters may ask about her opponent. The current incumbent is Republican Ed Goodwin, who has a long history of promoting the NC GOP priorities of cutting taxes for wealthy and corporations while cutting services for everyday North Carolinians. Goodwin opposes increasing school funding and teacher pay and voted against Medicaid, even though it would provide health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people, lower health care costs for everyone, and ultimately cost the state nothing. According to Real Facts NC, Goodwin demonstrated his priorities as a former Chowan County Commissioner, when he “dealt with budget difficulties by making cuts to public services such as after school care, daycare, the public library, and support services for survivors of domestic violence.”
