Primer on the courts

Republicans swept our statewide court races in 2022 and now hold large majorities on both our State Supreme Court (5-2) and our Court of Appeals (11-4).

The new far-right Supreme Court majority has already caused significant damage, and the Republicans justices’ terrible record on a wide variety of issues points to where this is likely to go. We must stop the right-wing takeover of our courts and protect the rights of all North Carolinians.

We have an opportunity to take back our state courts by 2028 – before new maps are drawn for the next decade. This is North Carolina’s one big shot at fair maps.

In 2026, we must re-elect Justice Anita Earls to the N.C. Supreme Court and defend the three seats on the N.C. Court of Appeals held by Democrats Judge John Arrowood, Judge Allegra Collins, and Judge Toby Hampson. All of these seats have eight-year terms, so the stakes for each race are high – and each win will have long-term effects.
